Mother Warns Parents After Toddler Swallows Metal Wire Hidden Inside Birthday Cake Decoration
A mother’s social media warning has drawn attention to hidden hazards in decorative birthday cakes after her young son accidentally swallowed metal wire embedded in a cake decoration. The child was hospitalized, and medical scans revealed metal pieces in his intestine before they passed naturally, prompting renewed concerns over cake safety for children.
The incident occurred during the birthday celebrations of Reyaansh. According to his mother, the family had gathered on May 31 to celebrate the eve of his birthday with a bowling-themed cake, decorations, and loved ones. However, the following day, on June 1, which marked the child’s third birthday, the family found themselves at a hospital after the boy reportedly swallowed a metal wire hidden inside the cake decoration.
Sharing her experience on Instagram, the mother alleged that a bakery in Thane had used metal wire to support decorative elements on the cake without informing the family. She stated that the bakery had placed the wire inside decorations despite knowing that the cake was intended for a young child.
“This is the video I never thought I’d be making. 31st May — we celebrated Reyaansh’s birthday eve. It was everything I dreamed of. The decorations, the cake, the family, the love. 1st June — his actual 3rd birthday — we were at the hospital. A bakery in Thane used metal wire inside the cake decorations without informing us. Despite knowing my child would eat the cake,” she wrote.
The mother further revealed that her two-year-old son had swallowed the wire, leading to anxious hours for the family as they awaited medical updates. “My 2 year old son swallowed that wire. We spent his birthday not knowing what would happen next. This is our story. And after 48 hours — you won’t believe what came out of his body,” she added.
In a follow-up video, she claimed that medical examinations, including an X-ray, showed two metal pieces lodged in the child’s intestine. She later informed viewers that both pieces passed naturally through his body and that surgery was not required.
Following the ordeal, the mother urged parents to exercise caution when ordering decorative cakes and to ask bakers whether metal wires, toothpicks, plastic supports, or other non-edible materials had been used in the design.
The incident prompted strong reactions on social media. One user wrote, “Omg this is scary! Happy to know he is safe. God bless.” Another commented, “As a mother, this scares me a lot.. thank god your boy is safe now.” A third user remarked, “Lesson learnt. Not to choose cakes which has non edible items for kids under 5 least.” Another person questioned the use of elaborate decorative cakes, stating, “Honestly opting for such cakes itself is a mistake. I mean do u realise the amount of colour ur kid ingested.”
The incident has reignited discussions about the safety of decorative cake elements and the potential risks posed by non-edible supports hidden within cakes intended for young children.
